How much time do you spend feeding your child’s soul?

As a parent I am busy with math homework, manners, and the moderation of sugar. Fast forward eighteen years. After all the education, social etiquette and mealtimes, I may be left to wonder how much time I spent concentrating on the well-being of my child’s soul.

I was certain to hand down my heritage, my hair color, and even some of my foibles. But I was less certain that I was passing on the more complex material such as how to foster a relationship with the Divine, the importance of developing a belief system, and the reason for a soul’s incarnation. Aren’t these the more essential ingredients for raising a healthy, well-adjusted human being?

Perhaps a diet high in soulfulness is the best recipe for our kids. So, I started an active dialogue with my child. Her interest in the topic immediately peaked and together we began to incorporate activities that fed her soul. Over time, the practice of gratitude, appreciating the natural world, stargazing, and winding down with meditation has become woven into the fabric of our daily lives.

It has also made me examine how I live my own life as a spiritual being. No matter what we may preach, leading by example is one of the strongest ways our children get the message. That is not to say I have to be perfect, but my own spiritual growth will also have a positive effect on my child.

I want my daughter to develop a relationship with the Divine that will serve to deepen her relationship with the most precious parts of herself. After all, I believe that is what all our relationships are supposed to be about. Here are three key steps to raising a soul-full child:

Step 1: Make the connection. Open up a dialogue on the topic of spiritual development. As the dialogue expands, remember to include input and thoughts from your loved one.

Step 2: Spend quality time now on the growth of their soul. Cultivate unique traditions, rituals, and activities that you can enjoy together. Continuing to nurture your own spiritual life at the same time will also set the example.

Step 3: Pass it on. Many delightful things can happen as you and your loved one share these experiences. Just as we keep immunization records, report cards and little league jerseys, record the journey by maintaining a scrapbook or journal. This way your spiritual legacy will live on.
