Instructions for Life by The Dalai Lama
- Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
- When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.
- Follow the three R’s:
- Respect for self,
- Respect for others and
- Responsibility for all your actions. - Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
- Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.
- Don’t let a little dispute injure a great relationship.
- When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
- Spend some time alone every day.
- Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.
- Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
- Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and
think back, you’ll be able to enjoy it a second time. - A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.
- In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don’t bring up the past.
- Share your knowledge. It is a way to achieve immortality.
- Be gentle with the earth.
- Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.
- Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.
- Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.
- If you want others to be happy, practice compassion.
- If you want to be happy, practice compassion.

If you think about the article, it really is what we all know inside our hearts & souls, but because of our hectic, fast pased lifestyles we tend not to listen to our hearts and souls anymore. we let our ego's run our lives. In the world there are only a very few people i.e. The Dali Lama, Nelson Mandela, etc... who we as a general public actually sit up and listen to. It takes a very special person to ignite this kind of passion in the world wide community. Thank-you...

I am not a religious man but I believe you can learn something positive from many places. Karma or the law of attraction I've found is very real. I recently had an experience that made me very angry. I found that when you react with compassion wonderful things can happen. These are 20 great ideas to better karma!

All throughout my life I had been acting very childish, thank the Lord I am only 15. I've been experiencing Karma, and let me tell everyone that reads this comment, it is real. It is about as real as you, it's about as real as me. I think it's time for me to step up and become a man, I will memorize these rules and live by them.
Thanks! |

I think this advice from the Dalia Lama for good karma is excellent. People don't always recieve the full reward for the good they do in this life. Some times they don't recieve their reward until the afterlife. People don't always recieve punishment for their misdeeds until the afterlife. I think of creating good karma being similar to investing in good relationships or putting money in the bank. Your intentions and thoughts are important with karma. Spiritually, thoughts are powerful things. I believe that we develop compassion and empathy in life from various experiences. God Bless every one here. :)

Great ideas. I love the one about 'not getting what you want being a stroke of luck!' That is so true. What we all need to do is start learning about and practicing compassion and all of these will fall into place. I recently attended a lecture by Karen Armstrong on the theme of Compassion which is obviously the Dalai Llama's life work. I wrote about it at my blog Aller-Retour: http://dayreturn.wordpress.com/2011/12/09/complexity-in-ten-words-or-less-karen-armstrong-on-compassion-at-the-world-congress-of-faiths/

My dear, Dalai Lama,
Allow me to say that I am a Muslim, but feel so much for other religion. As a Muslim I am not suppose to change faith and only to put my faith to Allah. However, I have not been able to relate to Islam very much even though Islam is simple and true just as other religion is, but am able to relate to Buddhism. I am healthy (praise the Al Mighty), but never really had peace of mind. At time I don't know if I am going or coming, sitting or walking. My mind works on overdrive thinking of things that are sometimes irrelevant. Since these couple of years I have been thinking of making an audience to meet you in person. Will that be possible? Will you be able to guide me please? I need help in knowing who I really am and what is my purpose in life. I have managed to help others, but never could help myself. I am sad on the inside, but have always managed to hide so that others will not see me in my true self. Please help me. Thank you sincerely. Love & Peace. Erina Ahmad |

These may be good ideas but the Dalia Lama did not say them. I wish this would quit being attributed to him. Don't you think he would at least quote some of Buddha's teachings since he is a Buddhist. Like the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, learn to meditate or even something about selflessness?

I like #18 because we, Americans especially. tend to judge success by whether or not that person or company or enterprise has made a lot of money. Rich people are revered in our country. It seems to me that assessment of success can be based on a number of different criteria. Like, even if a business or a service provider---let's say there's a doctor who works in a poor area but he is the most popular doctor; his practice is always full. He has more work than he can do. He has a mediochre income and lives very simply in his personal life. Is he successful or not?

This is the key to happiness and the best way to find yourself...the past is the past, and not bringing it up in any conflict is a very mature and good way to solve problems without creating more.

This is something like the 20 commandments to living a purposeful life. If we all were to live by these suggestions, the world might be a better place to live. Unfortunately these guidelines would be too much work for many. I am not sure if I could apply myself to all of them?
